Process and Vision: TAKAHIRA, Satoshi

This exhibition is the culmination of the Artist in Residency program organized by the Kushiro Art Museum Hokkaido and the Hokkaido University of Education.

Latest participant Satoshi Takahira is a budding artist who has just completed the graduate program at the University of Hawaii last year. This exhibition displays works Satoshi created over the course of three and a half months at various locations, such as the Kushiro campus of the Hokkaido University of Education, Art Workshop Room in Kushiro Art Museum, and studio space in the Kene Elementary School of Memuro City in Tokachi. He explores deepening exchanges with Eastern nature, environment and culture as he further examines his own visual world. During the exhibition in this particular space, Satoshi will demonstrate his unique work process. “Han-drawing" (han meaning print, or printmaking) is what Satoshi calls his original methodology of using the traditional techniques while at the same time protruding the concept of printmaking.

Satoshi’s expressive world is created on a single piece of paper through a technique of “single-block multi-colored printmaking" (一版多色刷り), which reflects a multi-layered vision of the world he perceives through astigmatism and strabismus. Accidental imagery created through the repeated process of drawing and printmaking overlaying aids Satoshi’s creative energy to a discovery of new form of beauty.

We hope that this exhibition, his first solo exhibition after returning to his home country, will help activate regional understanding and appreciation of contemporary art.
